Baby's first corset!
It's currently kind of ill-fitting in the back, because my ribcage is small in comparison to my ginormous hips. The lovely lady in the shop told me to come back once I've worn it in (it'll give a few cms with wear) and she'll do some sewing on the top of it to make it fit me better.
I'll be wearing a loose-fitting shirt under it for the pirate party tomorrow, so it hopefully won't be too obvious that it's a bit loose around the top.
I should be able to cinch myself in a bit more with the help from my friends. Tightening it yourself is hard, man. I'm also not wearing it sooper sooper tight right now because I'm trying to just get used to wearing it. I've never worn a corset before! So I'll wear it around the house for a couple hours today, then probably wear it like this for a few hours tomorrow before the party, too, and then have my friends tighten it for the actual party.
(Yes, those are garden gnomes on my t-shirt. Hidden under the corset is the text "Hangin' with my gnomies.")

here is why many babies did not survive in this era. man would make ladies wear corsets even when pregnant… it's beautiful when not pregnant and just torture when pregnant.
This is a photo of Madame Polaire, who was indeed a tightlacer, but this photo has been altered. Think of it as Victorian photoshop.
Pregnancy corsets were common in the Victorian era, but were much like the baby bands of today, built specifically to support the back and help with the weight of the growing fetus. Corsets could actually relieve one of the real tortures of pregnancy: swayback.
Infant and child mortality rates in the Victorian era are actually better attributed to overcrowding, poverty, inadequate housing, poor sanitation, poor medical care, and no vaccinations. It was a social problem and not the result of a garment.

Not a corset, it's a longline bra. Pretty photos, though.

Historical Lingerie and Corset Dressing Sequence: Lace Embrace
Do you know any good places to find lots of information on historical corsets?
This is not something we're especially versed in (other than reading the occasional book), any followers have suggestions? I know at least a few of you are serious lovers of historical corsets.

Just posted a new video to The Lingerie Addict YouTube! It's of the historical corset and lingerie dressing sequence I saw at Lace Embrace. The entire thing is about 11 minutes long, but totally worth it. http://youtube.com/user/TheLingerieAddict #lingerieaddict #corset #corsets #laceembrace #lingerielover #fashion #style #history #instalingerie #instafashion #instastyle #beauty #hair #lingerielife

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find any online. Best bet is your nearest faire or local glassblower if you want a glass one. I’ve only used a metal one before though, so I can’t testify to the comfiness of the glass ones and they look bulkier. The metal one was awesome, stayed cool for a long time, and was small and easily hidden in my cleavage (although to be fair I can easily hide a bulky smartphone in my cleavage, I have a lot of it).

Sophie you're the best mod I'm so glad I run a corset blog with you <333
True fact. Dropping the kids off lets you cinch an extra quarter of an inch or more. -.-
but mom, i didn't have to go before i got in my corset!!!! promise.
I know, right? If I'm ever backed up, I just make a pot of strong coffee, lace up, and wait for the magic to happen.
Sound advice.

hello, ladies! I just wanted to ask a quick question: this is going to be my first summer in a corset and I wanted to know if you have any tips on staying cool while in a corset? I've looked at the mesh options from contour corsets and, though stunning, they're definitely out of my budget for right now. I really hate the heat because I can't comfortably wear all of my favorite layers. :(
As someone who takes a hiatus on corseting pretty much as soon as spring hits, I don't have a ton of good tips. If mesh isn't an option, try minimizing layers (e.g. just wear a tank top and corset, no outer layer over the corset) and keeping your body temperature low other ways.
Bodice coolers are awesome, they're a little metal tube that you fill with ice and put down your shirt. They help your core temperature stay cool, and you can buy them at ren faires and probably somewhere on the internet. You can even get pretty tops for them so you have decorative jewels and junk in your cleavage.
Cooling your wrists will also help. Kangaroos do something similar to what I do. I lick my wrists (or you can just put water on them) and then hold then in front of a fan. As the water evaporates, it cools the blood directly in your wrsts. It's the easiest to access, since it has some of the blood vessels closest to your skin. This means it takes cooler blood to your core, which will help cool your whole body. (I personally love wetting my wrists in a hot car and holding them out the window, it feels awesome.)
Remember to stay hydrated because you will be sweating a lot, change out your liner more than usual because your body oils will build up faster, and if your body can't handle it, take off the corset. Safety first, don't risk passing out just for another hour laced in.
Any followers who corset in the summer have any fun tips or tricks they use to stay cool?
What is your opinion of overbust/underbust corsets? when is each more appropriate?
It all depends on the person, fit, and situation.
Waist training is generally done with underbusts because daily wear means you need to be able to have a wider range of movement, although many tightlacers will put on overbusts for special occasions (or just because they feel like it).
I personally think that there shouldn't be any rules for when something is ~appropriate~ fashion wise, especially with corsets. You're already wearing a unique garment that isn't seen much in everyday fashion these days, who says you have to adhere to rules? I think it's all about the comfort of the wearer.
As far as fit goes, many people buying off the rack prefer underbusts because they're easier to fit, as most fitting difficulties in corsets are in the bust area. However, if you're lucky enough to find off the rack overbusts that fit you, it's really a style and range of motion decision.

ellie june navidson: a femmeinist on femmephobia and the empowerment of femme
AMAZING post go read it it's amazing.
"Of course no one needs makeup. But to be empowered en femme resists the widespread devaluation of femininity. It spits in the face of the idea that one should become masculine to attain power and worth."
HELL YEAH
While not specific to corsets, I think this is important to think about when you are wearing a corset OR especially when someone is being rude about corsets being cruel torture devices etc etc
Corsets are a very strong symbol of obvious femininity, whoever is wearing it. And that femininity can be strong and empowering, in the same way that this post refers to dresses and makeup.
"To be empowered in and/or by a dress is to reject this chauvinist notion. Defiantly zipping a dress can be reclamation of femininity as powerful, as a gift, as a statement. Femininity is not less worthy; it is not a thing to run from. Femmes know this instinctively."
Many femmes who corset know the distinctively powerful feeling as they lace in, the feeling of molding your body to the shape you desire, the feeling of reclaiming the femininity that is looked down upon by society. The femininity of corsets is not weak, it's as strong as the steel cinching your waist.
It takes a strong person to wear a garment that most of modern society frowns upon. Never forget that.
